This looks like a LEGO set you could buy at the store, you can imagine this as the image on the box you walked past. It isn't. I put this together about a decade ago from pieces kept in a red plastic LEGO branded box.
The consequence of closing the blinds behind the LEGO set and allowing natural light to enter from a sliding glass door left shadows cascading across the scenery creating a sense of drama, like the prisoner's smile illuminated just beyond the jail door's bars.
Some people consider improvisation is a talent, others a skill.

Regardless of the medium and for the sake of art, improvisation is without instruction.
Like tao and zen, it has no discernible path but is a way forward.
Years ago, I put this together and photographed it.
The lighting and shadows are a fortune of needing the blinds in the background closed, but ample natural light entered from the left through a sliding glass door.
The pieces initially were a disappointing mess, mostly consisting of yellow brinks.
In short order, the gray pieces, the jail door, and pirate set people made the scene clear.
