Shortly after nine in the morning on April 19, 1995, Timothy McVeigh detonated a rental truck filled with two tons of explosives. The resulting blast, which leveled one-third of a federal building, registered at 3.0 on local seismometers.
In total, 168 people perished that day, including 19 children.
The Oklahoma City National Memorial encompasses much of the blast zone.
The Field of Empty Chairs rests upon the foundation of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building while the Reflecting pool covers the portion of NW 5th Street that ran past the federal building.
Other aspects of the memorial include a section of the chain-link fence that cordoned off the area during the rescue and investigation which still displays many tokens left at the site shortly after the bombing.
The infamous Survivor Tree still stands in Rescuers' Orchard after bearing the blast.
